Canadian Government Examines Asbestos Exposure

The federal government in Canada is hoping to poll some 2,600 Canadians to determine their potential exposure to asbestos-tainted insulation, found in many homes throughout the country.

According to an article in the London Free Press, government officials are in the process of selecting a polling company who will phone selected residents, including 200 who have lived on First Nations reserves, where asbestos insulation is commonplace.

The Department of Justice has chosen to conduct the survey because they believe that little is known about how Canadians are exposed to asbestos. The poll reflects the concern over a myriad of lawsuits pertaining to asbestos exposure, including large class action suits in British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan that name the government as well as Zonolite manufacturers and retailers in their suits.

Zonolite, which was mined by the W.R. Grace Company of Montana, was widely used in housing on military bases and on First Nations reserves, and in other home construction in Canada between 1950 and the early 1980s, notes the article. The federal government also helped fund its installation under the Canadian Home Insulation Program between 1977 and 1984.

Hundreds of Libby, Montana residents have been sickened from prolonged exposure to the vermiculite asbestos found in Zonolite. Many have already died from diseases such as mesothelioma, a lung cancer caused by asbestos.

The decision to conduct the poll is viewed as a victory by Canadian parliamentary member Pat Martin, who?s been lobbying for government funding of asbestos insulation removal in homes throughout Canada.
